Article Snippet: The main motor functions of the stomach consist of the accommodation of consumed food, the grinding of solids, and the delivery of food chyme into the small intestine.1 These physiological behaviors require an ordered movement, otherwise stomach dysfunction results.. It is believed that either a neural or a humoral mechanism at a higher level controls stomach movement.2 However, the stomach muscle itself also has a myogenic mechanism in mediating motility; namely, slow wave or electrical control activity.. This electrophysiologic activity, which originates from the proximal body of the stomach, shows continuous rhythmic change in the membrane potential, and, thereby, it propagates normally to the distal antrum, with a regular frequency of about 3cpm.3,4 Physiologically, the slow wave triggers the onset of the action potential in the stomach, which in turn, elicits muscle contractions.1,2 Hence, the slow wave is essential for determining stomach movement, including gastric emptying.5,6 Electrogastrography (EGG) refers to a method that records this rhythmic myoelectrical signal in stomach smooth muscle, employing electrodes positioned on the abdominal skin.7,8 The greatest advantage of EGG has been its noninvasive measurement of slow waves.7 We had previously assembled an EGG system that was acceptable for clinical measurement.9,10 However, currently available EGG systems, including ours are somewhat difficult to operate and obtain myoelectrical parameters only after completion of the whole recording. |
